Car AccidentPreviously a vehicle owner in the State of Texas is required, at a minimum, to carry the following limits of coverage on their car insurance policy:

  • $25,000 Bodily injury for each injured person with a minimum of $50,000 cumulative for multiple-person injury accidents.
  • $25,000 Property damage liability for property damage caused by an accident.

With medical bills costs escalating, you will notice that those numbers are awry of current medical expense levels. That is why the state of Texas increased its minimum car liability limits on January 1, 2011. The new limits will require you to have at least:

  • $30,000 bodily injury for each person injured with a minimum cumulative limit of $60,000 per accident.
  • The $25,000 property damage limit will remain the same.

Having the legally required liability minimums on your car insurance helps to guarantee that people who are injured or suffer from property damage after an accident are compensated. But the legal minimums do not automatically give you all the insurance coverage that you might need.

For example, if you are driving a car with three people inside and you have an accident, $60,000 may cover the treatment for two passengers’ injuries, but it may not cover any of the medical expenses for the third. If you responsible for the accident, then you are liable for the additional medical expenses not covered by the policy.

The property damage minimum of $25,000 may not be enough if you cause an accident that involves a luxury car or other property like someone’s home. And again, without enough insurance coverage, you will be liable for making the payments that exceed your insurance policy’s limit.

Working with an insurance agent will allow you to determine what the most reasonable policy limits really are for your area and amounts that can adequately protect your assets. Call us today to get a free Texas car insurance quote at (979) 268-1500.
